Well, I think I’m the last one from our squad to comment on Joel’s departure. Everyone has written some really nice things so now it’s my turn to give it a go.
Joel’s a great coach and it’s sad to see him go. We definitely had a good thing going. He took me under his wing in early 2006. I was 21 years old with very little experience and in 3 years he has developed me into a world class athlete.
Joel set a high standard and we were expected to meet that standard day in and day out. He kept things simple but always found ways to push the limits. Between him and I there was very little communication needed, we understood each other.
He was an extremely dedicated coach who never missed a session regardless of the weather. I can recount numerous days in Victoria where it would be pouring down rain and Joel would be right there on the scooter motor-pacing us and getting drenched.
This isn’t the first time I’ve changed coaches and it probably won’t be the last. I’ve learned a lot from each coach I’ve worked with over the years and Joel was no exception. I’ll never forget the things he has taught me and I’ll always remember the fun times we had together with the squad.
Joel – we’ll have “Notorious” on queue for when you return…
